About Us.

From humble beginnings to being the best seafood eatery in town.

Our Story

We are all Ocean Wise! The concept of our restaurant is to bring those ocean wild species to the table. Pink Salmon, Humbolt Squid, Mussels and prawns and the list goes on… We provide sustainable, healthy, and high quality seafood to the community.  We focus on local and seasonal seafood from producers who care as much about the health of our oceans as we do.

The Fish Counter is a place that serves the whole community. We want you to feel comfortable coming in, whether you are buying a small piece of fish, grabbing a chowder to go, or just want to amble in and learn more about sustainable seafood. Think of us as your farmers’ market, for SEAFOOD!

Let’s talk about the store design...

The Fish Counter was designed by Wendy Taylor with an eye of function, flow, simplicity, and sustainability. Wendy obtained her degree in interior design from Kwantlen Polytechnic University and has the LEED Professional accreditation. The shop features scaffolding planks, hundred-year-old beams, reclaimed farmers’ fence posts, concrete panels, a barn door aged with vinegar and steel wool, and, as its backbone: a beam from the old, iconic Woodward store. The benches were built by wood sculptor Jesse Toso at Stump Artist.

“Designing The Fish Counter was a collaborative effort: We had a clear vision about the design so it was just a matter of refining and implementing. We wanted an understated look that didn’t feel contrived or over-designed. I took my inspiration from the Main Street neighborhood and its history of independent merchants.”

Our Suppliers

Our suppliers are the salt of the earth. We’ve been on their boats and ships and visited their farms. We’ve met their families. They’ve been known to step in and work the register when the shop gets too busy. They’re our allies in the sustainability movement. But more importantly, they’re our friends.

All our servings are top quality, fresh, tasty, and perfectly prepared.

Our Food Policy

We have a straightforward policy for the food that we serve to our valuable customers. We always serve quality meals using the freshest of ingredients. We do not add any MSG, or bulking agents to our batter mix. We have a longstanding relationship with our suppliers to source the best quality fish and other ingredients.

Our Core Values

We want to make every customer feel special through our core values of TOP QUALITY, FRESHNESS OF GOODS, GREAT HOSPITALITY, COMPETITIVE PRICE, and ETHICS.
